In the video “Dysdance,” Yao Qingmei films a performance with ten teenagers from a special class at Jean Wiener Middle School in the Paris suburbs. During the pandemic, team sports in schools were banned. Yao’s art workshop, respecting social distancing measures, explores the themes “What is measuring, what is distance, who measures whom?”. This reflection addresses the tensions between collective safety and individ- ual freedom, as well as between the body and disciplinary mechanisms. “Dysdance,” meaning “dance learning disorder,” is a word created by the artist from the English word “distance.” ...
